A simple marriage does not end when everyone signs the paperwork. The appointment may only take a few minutes, but there are still a few practical steps after the legal ceremony.
The good news is that the after-marriage admin is usually much easier if you understand the difference between the certificate you receive on the day and the official certificate issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages.
What happens on the day
At the marriage appointment, the couple, the authorised celebrant, and two adult witnesses sign the required marriage certificates.
The celebrant gives you a ceremonial certificate on the day. That certificate is meaningful, and it records the ceremony, but it is not the document most organisations want for identity, passport, banking, or surname updates.
For those practical purposes, most couples need the official marriage certificate issued by Tasmania Births, Deaths and Marriages after the marriage has been registered.
Registration comes before the official certificate
After the appointment, the celebrant lodges the marriage paperwork with the registry. Once the marriage has been registered, you can apply for the official certificate.
That is the certificate most couples need for:
- surname updates
- passport updates
- bank and superannuation records
- visa or migration paperwork
- proof of marriage for official purposes

The certificate type matters
If you need the certificate for identity or name-change purposes, you usually want the standard official marriage certificate. A short extract may show names, date, and place, but it is not suitable for most evidence-of-identity uses.
The safest path is to check what the organisation asking for proof actually requires, then order the certificate that matches that purpose.
Do you have to change your name?
No. You do not have to change your name after marriage.
If you do want to use your spouse’s surname after an Australian marriage, you normally use the official marriage certificate as evidence with the organisations you need to update. The ceremonial certificate from the wedding day is usually not enough for that job.

If you need your official certificate for a visa, passport, employment, travel, or banking deadline, do not leave the certificate question until the last minute.

- get married
- let the celebrant lodge the registration documents
- apply for the official certificate after registration
- use the official certificate with the organisations that need it
