Registry-style ceremonies by civil celebrants, not a government registry office. No fuss, no frills, no wedding. Just paperwork.

ID Requirements

The identity, birth, previous-marriage, name-change, and translation documents couples may need before a Tasmania marriage appointment.

To get married, your celebrant usually needs evidence of your date and place of birth, plus evidence of identity.

Most Couples Use Either:

  • a passport

or

  • a birth certificate plus photo ID

Photo ID

In most cases, a driver’s licence or passport is the simplest photo ID to use.

If you do not have those, ask us before assuming you are stuck. Some couples need a different document pathway.

If You Were Previously Married

You will also need proof that the previous marriage has ended, usually:

  • a divorce order
  • or a death certificate

If Your Name Has Changed

If your current legal name is different from the name on your birth certificate or other documents, you will usually need the document that explains the change, such as:

  • a change of name certificate
  • a marriage certificate
  • another official linking document

If Your Documents Are Not in English

You will need:

  • the original document
  • an official translation

The interpreters and translators page explains when translated documents or an interpreter may be needed.

A Helpful Rule

Do not guess. If your paperwork is unusual, ask before booking travel or making plans around it.

The easiest way to avoid delays is to get the NOIM and your documents sorted early.
