There are two different issues here:
- translated documents
- an interpreter for the marriage process or ceremony
If Your Documents Are Not in English
You will usually need:
- the original document
- an official translation
This commonly applies to birth certificates, divorce documents, and other supporting paperwork.
If One of You Does Not Understand English Well Enough
If either person does not understand the language used well enough to understand the legal meaning of the marriage, an interpreter may be needed.
The important point is that both people must understand what is happening and freely consent.
What We Recommend
Sort translation and interpreter issues early.
These are the kinds of problems that can delay a marriage if left until the last minute.
If you are unsure whether you need an interpreter, ask before the appointment is locked in.
