Australian marriage law requires a completed Notice of Intended Marriage to be given to your celebrant at least one calendar month before the marriage.
That is one calendar month, not 28 days and not 30 days.
What Starts the Clock
The notice period starts when the celebrant receives the completed NOIM.
It does not start when you:
- make an enquiry
- book online
- pay the fee
- talk about dates
Easy Examples
- If your NOIM is given on 15 January, the earliest marriage date is 15 February.
- If your NOIM is given on 1 May, the earliest marriage date is 1 June.
- If your NOIM is given on 31 January, the earliest marriage date is 1 March.
If Only One Person Can Sign in Time
In some situations, one person’s signature can still begin the notice period if the other person’s signature cannot conveniently be obtained at least one month before the marriage and the form contains the required information for both people.
The other person must still sign before the marriage is solemnised.
Can the Month Be Shortened?
Sometimes, but only:
- after the NOIM has first been lodged
- and only if a prescribed authority approves it
- and only for one of the recognised categories in the regulations
It is never automatic.
The Practical Advice
If you want the easiest path:
- do your NOIM early
- use NOIM Easy
- send the paperwork in as soon as you can
Your date, time, and place are only properly confirmed once the paperwork is received and checked, and that is one reason to move the NOIM early.
